Giving information about this decision, Food and Supplies Minister Piyush Goyal said that the government has extended the period of the free food grain distribution scheme PMGKAY for six months. Now the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana will continue till September 2022.
The plan was ending on 31 March
It is worth noting that since the year 2020, the free ration is being provided to poor families under this scheme by the Central Government. Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana was announced in March 2020. Initially, this scheme was launched for the period of April-June 2020, but later it was extended till November 30, 2021, and March 31, 2022.
In addition to subsidized food grains, the free ration is given
Under PMGKAY, more than 80 crore people are being provided 5 kg food grains per month. Under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 80 crore ration cardholders have been identified for free ration. They are given free rations in addition to the subsidized food grains distributed through ration shops.
The scheme is limited to ration cardholders only.
It is noteworthy that the benefit of free food grains under PMGKAY is not for those who do not have a ration card. Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana is limited to the ration card holders, that is, the citizen of the country who has a ration card available is getting his quota of ration as well additional ration under this scheme.
